How to Help Your Thyroid with a Simple and Natural Oil

Many Americans suffer from symptoms such as cold hands and feet, low body temperature, sensitivity to cold, a feeling of always being chilled, headaches, insomnia, dry skin, puffy eyes, hair loss, brittle nails, joint aches, constipation, mental dullness, fatigue, frequent infections, hoarse voice, ringing in the ears, dizziness, loss of libido, and weight gain, which is sometimes uncontrollable.
Approximately 65 percent of the U.S. population is overweight; 27 percent is clinically obese. Research is pointing to the fact that an underactive thyroid might be the number one cause of weight problems, especially among women.
Because coconut oil is saturated and very stable (unrefined coconut oil has a shelf life of about three to five years at room temperature), the body is not burdened with oxidative stress as it is with the vegetable oils. Coconut oil does not require the enzyme stress that vegetable oils do, preventing T4 to T3 hormone conversion, not only because it is a stable oil, but also because it is processed differently in the body and does not need to be broken down by enzyme dependent processes as do long-chain fatty acids.
Also, since the liver is the main place where damage occurs from oxidized and rancid oils that cause cell membrane damage, and since the liver is where much of the conversion of T4 to T3 takes place, eliminating long-chain fatty acids from the diet and replacing them with medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil can, in time, help in rebuilding cell membranes and increasing enzyme production that will assist in promoting the conversion of T4 to T3 hormones.
More research in this area is necessary. In the meantime, those switching from polyunsaturated oils to coconut oil are reporting many positive results. For example, Donna has experienced encouraging improvements in her thyroid health. She writes:

UPPER FOREHEAD

Digestive System and Bladder
Drink plenty of water to flush, keep an eye on your diet, eliminate greasy foods and refined sugars. If you’re craving deep fried fatty foods, eat avocado or add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your dish. Make sure you consume plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Some of the best antioxidant rich foods or drinks include green tea, warm lemon water, and fresh berries. If your diet is not rich in naturally fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, or kefir, consider supplementing with a probiotic capsule daily. If you want healthy kidneys it’s best to avoid fast food in general, even the “healthy” restaurants, drink more water, and eat more parsley which is an excellent detoxifier.

EYES, ORBITAL AREA AND BETWEEN THE EYEBROWS

Liver
 
Oiliness, redness, flakiness and pimples between the eyebrows can indicate that your liver may have been overworked and in dire need of a cleansing. Cut back on greasy foods loaded with vegetable, soy, and canola oil, alcohol and pasteurized dairy (or dairy altogether). Avoid eating late at night as well. If you’re craving a late snack take a spoonful of raw honey. This will let your liver rest while you’re sleeping. Eat more of these during the daytime to cleanse the liver (always choose organic root vegetables):

Depression, which was once believed to be a strictly mental condition, is now being found to be genetic. Depression effects more than 19 million people in America every single year. The most common treatment options for depression include medications with a variety of harmful side effects. Below is a list of natural, home made remedies that can help treat the symptoms of clinical depression.
1. St. John’s Wort
St. John’s wort is a popular herbal treatment for mild to moderate depression. It has chemical constituents like hypericin and hyperforin that work like an antidepressant, blocking re-uptake of serotonin and serotonin receptors.
Add one or two tablespoons of dried St. John’s wort to a cup of hot water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain and drink this tea twice daily. Follow this routine regularly to lift your mood.
Alternatively, you can take 300 milligrams of St. John’s wort supplement three times a day.
Consult a doctor before beginning regular use of St. John’s wort.
2. Cardamom
Cardamom can help detoxify the body and rejuvenate the cells, in turn helping improve your mood and treat depression.
Add one-half teaspoon of cardamom powder to one cup of warm water or milk. Drink it once daily.
You can also add a few drops of cardamom oil to your bath water. Soak yourself in this uplifting aroma-filled bath for 30 minutes daily.
3. Nutmeg
Nutmeg works like a brain tonic and helps stimulate your brain, eliminate fatigue and stress, and improve your mood.
Mix one-eighth teaspoon or a dash of nutmeg powder in one tablespoon of Indian gooseberry juice.
Drink this two times daily to calm the mind and relieve depression.
Do not take raw nutmeg in large doses as it has psychoactive effects.
4. Saffron
Saffron is high in carotenoids and B vitamins that help increase the levels of serotonin and other chemicals in the brain. In fact, a study published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology has found saffron to be as effective as fluoxetine (Prozac) in reducing mild to moderate depression.
Take 15 mg of dried extract of saffron twice daily to fight depression.
You can also use a little bit of saffron in cooking, milk shakes or smoothies.
5. Cashews
Being rich in vitamin C, cashew nuts stimulate the nervous system. Also, the riboflavin in cashews boosts energy so you can be active and joyful. Other useful nutrients in cashews that help combat depression are magnesium, tryptophan and vitamin B6.
Add one teaspoon of cashew nut powder to one cup of warm milk. Drink it once daily.
You can also eat a handful of dry roasted cashews as a healthy snack to lift your mood.
6. Fish Oil
Studies have found that people with depression usually have low intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are required for normal brain functioning, and is highly recommended for people with depression.
Take a daily supplement of fish oil to fight depression. Fish oil supplements are sold in health food stores, drug stores, grocery stores and online. Consult a doctor for the proper dosage.
Alternatively, you can eat cold water fish like salmon, sardines, and anchovies that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed and soy products are also good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
7. Apples
Apples contain high levels of vitamin B, potassium and phosphorus. All these nutrients help your brain repair damaged nerve cells to improve its functioning, in turn helping fight symptoms of depression.
Chop one apple and put it in a blender or juicer to extract its juice.
Add the apple juice and one tablespoon of honey to one cup of warm milk.
Drink this twice a day.
Also, you can eat one apple daily to prevent depression.
8. Honey
The natural sugar present in honey helps fight the low feelings of depression. Plus, honey can relax frayed nerves. The amino acid called tryptophan present in honey induces sleep, which can help when depression is preventing you from getting proper sleep.
Gently crush five to 10 almonds and mix it with one tablespoon of honey. Eat one teaspoon of this this mixture twice daily, once in the morning and again before going to bed.
Mix one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of ginseng powder. Add one cup of hot water to this mixture and let it stand for five minutes. Drink it twice a day.
9. Asparagus
Asparagus contains several powerful compounds that can help lift your spirits and fight various symptoms of depression.
The high folate content in asparagus improves brain functioning, while its vitamin E helps put you in a good mood. Plus, the tryptophan present in asparagus produces serotonin in the brain that stabilizes moods.
To fight depression, eat asparagus fresh, steamed or grilled three or four times a week.
You can also take one-half or one teaspoon of powdered asparagus root with a glass of water daily as a depression beater.
10. Chicken
Low levels of vitamin B6 can contribute to depression. The body needs vitamin B6 to make mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. You can get the required amount of vitamin B6 from chicken. There is 0.5 mg of the vitamin in just 3 ounces of chicken.
Chicken is best for you when baked in the oven or stir fried with your favorite vegetables. You can also have a bowl of chicken soup. Avoid eating the skin or fried chicken, which can cause other health problems. Eat chicken two or three times a week.
Along with these natural alternatives, you can also do some practical things to lift your mood. Things like getting enough rest, avoiding junk foods, abstaining from alcohol, exercising daily, socializing, and laughing.

Help yourself steer clear of harmful food products this holiday by preparing something delicious and healthful for Christmas dinner. This popular, easy-to-make dessert features winter fruits that bring health-enhancing nutrients to the table.

APPLE-PEAR-CRANBERRY CRUMBLE

6 organic tart apples, cored and sliced thin (peeling is optional) [Granny Smith apples are best for cooking]
3-4 organic pears, cored and sliced
1 cup organic cranberries, fresh or frozen
1/4 cup + 1/2 cup raw unfiltered honey, divided
3/4 cup organic whole barley flour (or buckwheat or brown rice flour for gluten-free)
1/2 cup sliced or chopped almonds
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. sea salt
1/3 cup butter

In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup honey, 2 tbsp. flour, and cinnamon. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a buttered 9x13 glass baking pan, place apple slices evenly. Spread honey mix over apples. Place pear slices evenly over top. Scatter cranberries over all.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine remaining flour, salt, 1/2 cup honey, and almonds. Cut butter into small pieces and blend well into this mixture. Spread evenly over fruit in baking pan. Bake at 350 for about 40 minutes, or until topping is lightly browned and fruit is bubbly.

Healthy Holiday Dishes, Part 4

Navigating through the holidays can be a challenge for someone committed to eating healthfully, but it is very do-able. While everyone else is gorging on harmful food products, it's easy to whip up delicious treats for your family using only healthful ingredients. Try this Blueberry Coffee Cake, for example. Great for a brunch or your holiday potluck table, or just anytime!

1 1/2 cups organic whole barley flour (for gluten-free, use buckwheat or brown rice flour - this may sacrifice some texture, but it will still be good)
1 tbsp. non-aluminum baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1 1/2 cups organic blueberries (frozen or fresh)
1 free range egg
1/2 cup raw milk or coconut milk
1/4 cup raw honey
1/4 cup butter, melted

TOPPING:
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup raw honey
1 tbsp. flour
1/2 cup chopped organic walnuts

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir in blueberries.

In a small bowl, beat egg, honey, milk, and butter. Add to dry ingredients and stir gently until mixed. Spread in a greased 7 x 11 glass baking pan.

Combine all topping ingredients and distribute evenly over batter in pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is light golden brown. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Healthy Holiday Dishes, Part 3

Here's an easy brunch casserole that can be made ahead and refrigerated the night before, and baked off in the morning. You'll start everyone's day right with veggies!

EASY ZUCCHINI-EGG BAKE

3 cups of chopped organic zucchini (no need to peel)
1 large organic onion, chopped
2 cloves of organic garlic, minced
1/4 cup butter

Saute zucchini, onion, and garlic in the butter until onion is transparent and tender. Set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the following:

4 free-range eggs
1/2 cup raw Parmesan cheese
1/2 tsp. dried basil (or 1 tbsp. snipped organic fresh basil
1/2 tsp. dried marjoram
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/4 cup organic parsley, minced

Add the zucchini mix AND 1 cup of grated raw Pepper-Jack cheese. Mix lightly, and pour into a greased 1-quart baking dish. Can be covered and refrigerated at this point. Remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour before baking, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 30+ minutes, or until the middle is set. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
Serves 6.

Top 10 Natural Remedies for Swollen Ankles, Legs and Feet

Several years ago I was on a ferry between two Thai islands and got chatting to a girl sitting next to me. She complained of swollen legs and ankles, and when I looked at her more closely, I did notice her puffy feet. It always makes me worried to see someone’s leg swell. I think of all the serious conditions that could be connected with this symptom, including problems with the heart and kidneys, or a blood clot.
Indeed, if your lower limbs become swollen and you have other ominous signs to go with it – such as shortness of breath, fever, bluish skin (cyanosis) and chest pain – head for the emergency department immediately. Also, if one leg looks swollen, while the other one appears normal, see a doctor, as this unevenness could be a sign of deep venous thrombosis. Some prescription medication too can cause swelling, such as birth control pills, anti-depressants and medication for high blood pressure.
In the case of my fellow passenger, the condition was far from dangerous – it was just slightly uncomfortable for her. She happened to spend too much time sitting on trains and buses, and was also adapting to the humid tropical climate, so was feeling slightly dehydrated. She happily continued with her travels and was fine in a few days time.
Every case of swelling needs to be considered in its context to make sure you’re not missing a potentially serious condition. You need to be able to distinguish between harmless swelling and edema. In the case of edema, if you press on the puffy area, it stays pitted for a few seconds after. This could be a sign of heart, liver or kidney problems.
Very often leg swelling can be prevented by some simple measures and DIY techniques. Here are some examples you can follow to prevent the swelling, or to return to your previous swelling-free self:
1. Exercise! Exercising stimulates blood circulation and prevents the blood from pooling in your lower extremities. If you’re suffering from painful or inflamed legs, swimming can be the perfect solution. When you float, the impact is taken off your feet, which eases the discomfort. So find a pool, or take a dip in a nearby sea or lake. If you do yoga, go for the postures that make you lift your feet above the head. This is called an inversion and has many health benefits, including improved immunity and digestion. So start with your headstand as soon as you notice your feet swelling… and experience the thrill of it.
2. Elevate your legs. If you’re not quite ready for the headstand yet, try elevating your legs by putting them on a higher surface so that they are above the heart. Do that for 30 minutes, three times a day, and observe the difference. When you’re in bed, put a pillow under your ankles. This will help drain the excess fluid, so it can then get absorbed in the body, or is eliminated with urine.
3. If you sit for long periods of time, get up and walk around a bit. When your boss asks you what you are up to, explain that you are just trying to prevent your feet from swelling. Walking for 10 minutes, three times a day, should be enough to keep your tootsies healthy and happy.
4. When you travel, consider wearing compression socks. I know that they can be difficult to put on, but they do serve their purpose. They help the blood vessels with their elasticity, so that the blood doesn’t pool in your legs. Plus, they prevent varicose veins. Consider wearing them on long-haul flights and on long bus and train journeys. My travelling friend would certainly benefit from wearing them. Also, support/compression socks or stockings can be good for you if you’re already suffering from leg inflammation.
5. Eat healthy and avoid excess salt. A bit of salt is good for you, and is in fact needed for the body to function well. But too much salt can cause water retention and should be avoided. Caffeine too is a known culprit. So go easy on the salt and try to bring your coffee intake to a minimum. If you are overweight, consider losing some weight, so you reduce the pressure that is put on your muscles, joints and bones. Every little helps.
6. Stop smoking! Smoking is one of the top 10 habits to stop right now if you want to be healthy. I know, easier said than done. But think of all the rewards that come when you stop smoking. Having your feet less swollen is just one of them. Also, smoking is related to many (more serious) underlying conditions that can cause lower limb swelling.
7. Drink plenty of water. We are all guilty of often not drinking enough fluids. By drinking water throughout the day, we hydrate our tissues and detox the body. Sodium and caffeine, which contribute to feet inflammation, get diluted if we water ourselves sufficiently. Eight to ten glasses a day should be the norm. Drink more if you had some alcohol. So make sure you carry that water bottle with you. For added antioxidant value, squeeze some lime or lemon in or prepare your own flavored water.
8. Massage the painful area. Or even better, make someone else do it for you. Massaging your feet is extremely relaxing and improves your blood circulation. Use gentle but firm motions, and always go in the direction of the heart.
9. Soak your feet in Epsom salt and feel the bliss. I’ve written in the past about the great uses for Epsom salt, and I’m sure your legs and feet will appreciate the attention. If you feel like indulging yourself completely, add a few cups of sea salt to your bathwater and soak your whole body. Essential oils can help alleviate pain and discomfort too. Some popular choices are peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon and lavender that are all known to have anti-inflammatory properties.
10. Take magnesium supplements. Often feet inflammation, which can result in painful swelling, is connected to magnesium deficiency. A dose of 350 mg a day can make a difference, but always talk to your doctor before taking any supplement.
Keep your legs healthy and pain-free. Remember how well they’ve been serving you over the years, and return the favor!

Recipe time

Need a change for your lunch menu? Here's a quick and easy autumn soup recipe that will warm you up on a cool day. It's adapted from a Taste of Home recipe called Southwestern Bean Soup.

1 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. butter
3/4 cup diced organic onion
3/4 cup chopped organic celery
1/8 tsp. garlic powder
1 can of Trader Joe's salsa-style organic re-fried beans
1/4 cup of organic salsa or picante sauce
2 cups organic chicken broth
1 tsp. liquid hickory smoke

Garnishes: shredded raw milk cheese, either cheddar or pepper Jack, according to your tastes; and 1 tbsp. chopped parsley or cilantro

In a large saucepan, saute onion and celery in olive oil and butter. Sprinkle with the garlic powder; cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.

Add the beans, salsa, and broth. Stir well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer the soup for 5-10 minutes. Stir in the liquid hickory smoke. Serve with chopped parsley and shredded cheese. If desired, serve with a few organic corn chips. Hot pepper sauce can be added to the soup if you want lots of kick! Makes 4 servings.

We always suggest that you take hot items to work in a well-insulated container, and avoid microwaving. So much nutritive value is lost in the microwave.

This soup is wonderful as a family meal, too. Just double or even triple the recipe, and serve with a big vegetable salad.

Changed name, same game

In recent years, the dangers of Aspartame have come to public notice, with the result that many people have been avoiding it.  In hopes of regaining business, the manufacturer of this artificial sweetener has put a new face upon the product.   You may now see it advertised as "AminoSweet."  But don't be fooled!  It's still Aspartame.




This chemical calamity is known for its neurotoxic effects, causing brain and nerve damage, cancerous tumors, and glandular failure.  Through intensive lobbying, it was granted FDA approval in 1974 - forty years ago!  That's how long it took for public awareness - and wariness - to reach the level that made Ajinomoto decide upon this new marketing scheme.




"Pure sweetness from amino acids" was the catch phrase they chose.  Notice the clever deceptiveness of the word "pure" in this context.  It can have two connotations:




       1) only this item and nothing else - like "pure olive oil."  Nothing has been added. Pure sweetness fits this category - nothing but sweetness.




       2) clean and untainted - like "pure drinking water."  No contaminants.  Nothing that would hurt you.

 

Doesn't "pure sweetness" give a subtle suggestion of the second meaning?  It's pure, so that means clean, natural and safe, right?




Wrong!




As the old saying goes, "Let the buyer beware."

Healthy Holiday Dishes, Part 2

Orange in color and flavor, with a tang from ginger and cayenne, this week's recipe embodies the spirit of autumn. But the season doesn't have to dictate. "Chicken for Fall" is a great dish to serve any time of the year!

Prepare ahead and refrigerate overnight before baking, if desired:

4 pounds of organic chicken thighs (Costco has better prices)
1 cup organic orange juice concentrate (Trader Joe's), thawed
1/3 cup melted butter
1 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 tsp. ground ginger
dash of cayenne, or to taste (may also use chili powder)

Combine orange concentrate, butter, and all seasonings. In one large or two smaller greased baking pans, place chicken thighs in a single layer. Cover well with the sauce. If refrigerating at this point to marinate, be sure to cover the pan(s).

Bake uncovered at 350 for about 1 hour, basting once with sauce halfway through. Garnish with organic orange slices and herbal sprigs, if desired. Makes about 8 delicious servings.

Tips for breast cancer prevention

1. Eat plenty of organic vegetables and fruits - lowers your risk by half. Include lots of cruciferous, like kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage; and also carotene-containing veggies, such as carrots, beets, and beet tops.

2. Exercise in a natural way every day - walking is excellent. If you treadmill, keep the setting at a walking speed that is natural and easy to you. Regular exercise should not be forced or unnatural.

3. Avoid wired bras entirely, and wear a bra only during the daytime hours. Underwires put great pressure on the lymph nodes under the breast, and this constant squeezing effect adds up to "Trouble!"

4. Make sure to get at least a few minutes of sunshine every possible day. Adequate levels of daily Vitamin D lower your risk.

5. Be sure to get plenty of Omega-3's (essential fatty acids) in your daily diet.

6. Support your immune system in every possible way. That includes eating the veggies as above, plus high-quality proteins from organic meats and eggs and raw dairy. Avoid sugar and chemical food additives or eating food that is cooked or stored in aluminum. Stay away from mercury - flu shots, amalgams, wheat flour products, many medicines.

7. Prescription drugs often will increase your risk. Artificial estrogen, beta-blockers, and anti-depressants are all known to increase the odds of developing breast cancer.

8. Last but not least, avoid chlorine. Women getting high levels multiply their risk of breast cancer up to 10 times. Get a quality chlorine filter on your shower head, and change the cartridge regularly as directed.

Remember, women don't "own" breast cancer! Most of these guidelines are appropriate for men, too - and for preventing cancer in general.

Healthy Holiday Dishes - Part 1

With Thanksgiving approaching, and Christmas just around the corner after that, we thought you would like some recipes that are both healthful and delicious.

Our featured recipe today is a wonderful sweet potato and apple combination. You will enjoy this so much, it won't be a hardship to pass up the traditional sugar-laden dish that someone else might bring to your potluck. This recipe is found in Mrs. Thropay's "Healthful Cooking Made Simple" cookbook, and is called "Yams 'n' Apples."

6 organic medium yams
2 large organic apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into rings just before using
1 cup organic apple juice
3 tbsp. raw honey
2 tbsp. non-GMO organic cornstarch OR organic tapioca starch
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cloves

Cut off small ends from scrubbed yams, and bake whole in a 350 oven for about 45 minutes, or until tender. (Place a cookie sheet on the rack below, to save the oven from spills.) Cool. Carefully remove the skins, then slice the yams and place the slices in overlapping rows in a greased 9x13 glass baking dish.

Peel, core, and slice the apples. Cut the apple rings in half, and insert each half, round side up, between the yam slices in the rows.

Heat apple juice in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Meanwhile, in a small cup, mix honey and cornstarch well into a paste. Add spices to the apple juice. Stir the honey/cornstarch paste into the mixture. Continue stirring until it is totally melted and the sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes. 1/2 tsp. of vanilla can be added at this point.

Drizzle the sauce evenly over the yams and apples in the baking dish. Bake uncovered at 350 for about 25 minutes, or until getting bubbly.
