From the Archives

from-the-archives
Today we're going to share with you a letter from 2007. It was written by Dr. Thropay after he had worked with this patient who came 3000+ miles to receive his care.

"Ken suffered with arachnoiditis for over 35 years.  It dated back to a myelogram he was given preparatory to back surgery that was performed on him in his teens.  The dye that was injected for the myelogram caused chronic inflammation in his spinal cord.

Besides that, the surgery did not relieve him of his pain.  The back pain and leg pains down to his feet became increasingly worse and more debilitating.  Seven years after the surgery, the medical doctors finally admitted that their procedures were to blame.

Fast forward three pain-filled decades...for the past two years before I saw him, he was taking multiple medications for pain and inflammation, including the highest permitted dose of one drug for eight weeks.  He was unable to function actively during those two years - in fact, had recently spent an entire five-week period flat on his back on the floor.

The only prognosis his doctors could give him was that he soon would be in a wheelchair.

My evaluation showed heavy metal toxicity, including mercury, antimony (from the dye), copper, aluminum, and lead.  As the metals were removed from his body, he was able to get off every one of his medications.  The pain continues to diminish, and he is 'up and running,' functioning normally and productively in his chosen field.

This amazing turnaround took place in only five weeks here!

Specific metal drainage - which is only one of many aspects of Nutrition Response Testing - is frequently the answer to many ailments."

Needless to say, Ken was only too willing to make the necessary dietary changes that would both hasten and extend his remarkable improvement.  We find that this is always the case - those who are fully committed to their customized program experience the highest level of success.

Honey & Ginger Kill Superbugs Better Than Pharmaceutical Meds

honey-ginger-kill-superbugs
Bacteria have been morphing into resistant strains of superbugs that make it very difficult for pharmaceutical companies to keep up with them, but research coming out of Ethiopia’sCollege of Medicine at the University of Gondar proves we don’t need Big Pharma to treat diseases that it ironically helped to create. A combination of ginger powder extract and honey are so effective that they inhibit the growth of superbugs like MRSA, E Coli, and even the bacteria that causes Pneumonia.
MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae  are some of the most damaging superbugs around. Yet when researchers compared Ethiopian honey combined with ginger powder to three different antibiotics and their ability to kill superbugs, the ginger and honey combination won over the pharmaceutical drugs  not by a little – but considerably. (They also tested a ginger-water solution for good measure).
The study abstract concluded:
“CONCLUSION. THE RESULT OF THIS STUDY SHOWED THAT HONEY-GINGER POWDER EXTRACT MIXTURES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO SERVE AS CHEAP SOURCE OF ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS ESPECIALLY FOR THE DRUG RESISTANT BACTERIA STRAINS.”
(Aside from this research, here are 8 natural antibiotics you should consider using).
Each ‘broth’ that the superbugs were exposed to was cultured for 20-24 hours. The three antibiotics used were some of the most ‘powerful’ the industry has ever created: methicillin, amoxicillin, and penicillin.
5 tests for each treatment of bacteria were conducted:
  • Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and non-MRSA)
  • Escherichia coli (two different strains)
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
With all three superbugs, the ginger and honey combination was more effective at inhibiting growth than any of the antibiotics. The only antibiotic that even came close was amoxicillin.
The mean inhibition levels of this dynamic duo averaged 25.62 and ranged from 19 to 30 – beating out all the pharmaceutical antibiotics by a landslide.
The ginger extract wasn’t made with any fancy process either. Researchers simply dried sliced root pieces at 37 degrees for 24 hours and then ground them and blended them with methanol and ethanol to make a 50% solution. This was then blended with the honey to make an exact 50-50 combination. (This process was performed by researchers. The recipe was used for research purposes only. Do not try at home.)
The water extract of the ginger had no inhibition of the bacteria. This is what other research has indicated – that alcohol apparently extracts the antibiotic constituents from the ginger.
We can continue to take lethal, health damaging antibiotics that kill our natural immunity, or we can research alternatives. The choice is simple.

Meat matters

86537028
For our Kitchen Q. and A. today, we're featuring questions we have been frequently asked over the years.
Q. What is the best meat to eat?
A. Healthy meat means "Yes" to grass-fed (as in beef or lamb), free range (as in chickens or turkeys), wild-caught in the cleanest possible waters (as in fish). It also means "Yes" to organic feed for supplemental use.
On the other hand, healthy meat means "No" to antibiotics or hormones - which are used to inflate the animals' weight quickly - and "No" to pesticided and GMO grain feeds and unnaturally confined lives in cages or dirt lots or fish farms. These negatives are passed on in various damaging ways to those who eat the meat.
Q. Where can I buy healthy meat?
A. Costco carries both organic ground beef and organic chickens and chicken parts. Trader Joe's has the same, and some canned wild Alaskan salmon. Sprouts is another source. Check your local grocer, as well. Ralphs carries organic ground beef, and Albertsons has organic chicken. Certain farmers' markets also carry organic meat - the Saturday market in Downey is one. As the popularity of eating more healthfully continues to grow, more commercial markets are listening and responding to the demand. That's good, so keep asking them!
Q. But what if I can't afford to buy healthy meat regularly?
A. That's a valid concern, because organic meat does cost more than the "regular" kind. We believe it's very important to prioritize this issue of healthful protein in your diet. Remember that quality trumps quantity here. Train yourself to live with smaller portions of meat - that will save money.
Another tip - as you clean up your diet in general, the unhealthful items you stop purchasing will free up a surprising amount of money for better things. For example: Eliminating five $7.00 trips to Starbuck's each week means you have an extra $35.00 to spend on healthful food! With careful menu planning, that will feed your whole family with organic meat dinners for the week.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Come and celebrate 2015 with us!  For every service you receive at our office in January - nutrition, chiropractic, massage - your name will be entered into our drawing. Triple or double your chances by visiting multiple practitioners in one visit!  We will also enter your name three times when you refer someone new who comes to us this month.

The drawing will take place on January 30th, and there will be three winners:

3rd prize - a large bottle of our popular multi-supplement Catalyn - a $40 value

2nd prize - a full-hour massage from Elvira - $45 value

GRAND PRIZE - a complete NutriBullet system - a $120 value!

Winners will be notified by telephone, and their names published in our weekly newsletter after the drawing.

You may have noticed the price change.  As of February 1st, 2015, our still very competitive massage fees will be $45 for a full-hour massage, and $30 for a half-hour massage.  You have the month of January to come in and take advantage of our old prices!

This year we will be featuring a "Kitchen Q. and A." in our newsletter.  Feel free to submit any questions you may have about cooking or eating healthfully.  We'll publish the answers each week in this letter, or even write you privately if you prefer.

Today's question has come to us numerous times:
"What is the best type of cookware to use?"

Answer. High-quality stainless steel "waterless" cookware is ideal for a full set of pots and pans. We recommend looking online for the best prices.  (Follow the manufacturer's directions, and use wooden implements to protect the inside finish.)  The new ceramic coated non-stick pans are also great. Clay, glass, or Corningware are fine, too.

And, of course, always avoid aluminum touching your food. Metal particles in foil and pots transfer into the food and give your body grief, sooner or later.  Aluminum is highly implicated in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other autoimmune conditions, and a host of other problems.

We look forward to your feedback on our new feature. See you soon!

Please call for your appointments at (562) 861-3896.

How to Help Your Thyroid with a Simple and Natural Oil

heal-thyroid-virgin-coconut-oil
Many Americans suffer from symptoms such as cold hands and feet, low body temperature, sensitivity to cold, a feeling of always being chilled, headaches, insomnia, dry skin, puffy eyes, hair loss, brittle nails, joint aches, constipation, mental dullness, fatigue, frequent infections, hoarse voice, ringing in the ears, dizziness, loss of libido, and weight gain, which is sometimes uncontrollable.
Approximately 65 percent of the U.S. population is overweight; 27 percent is clinically obese. Research is pointing to the fact that an underactive thyroid might be the number one cause of weight problems, especially among women.
Because coconut oil is saturated and very stable (unrefined coconut oil has a shelf life of about three to five years at room temperature), the body is not burdened with oxidative stress as it is with the vegetable oils. Coconut oil does not require the enzyme stress that vegetable oils do, preventing T4 to T3 hormone conversion, not only because it is a stable oil, but also because it is processed differently in the body and does not need to be broken down by enzyme dependent processes as do long-chain fatty acids.
Also, since the liver is the main place where damage occurs from oxidized and rancid oils that cause cell membrane damage, and since the liver is where much of the conversion of T4 to T3 takes place, eliminating long-chain fatty acids from the diet and replacing them with medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil can, in time, help in rebuilding cell membranes and increasing enzyme production that will assist in promoting the conversion of T4 to T3 hormones.
More research in this area is necessary. In the meantime, those switching from polyunsaturated oils to coconut oil are reporting many positive results. For example, Donna has experienced encouraging improvements in her thyroid health. She writes:
“I’VE BEEN ON COCONUT OIL SINCE SEPTEMBER 2002 AND, ALTHOUGH, THAT DOESN’T SEEM LIKE LONG, IT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE AND THE LIVES OF MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS. MY WEIGHT ACTUALLY WENT UP WHEN I STARTED ON COCONUT OIL BUT I FELT SO GREAT! BEING HYPOTHYROID, I WAS ON SYNTHROID AND CYTOMEL AND HAD BEEN FOR YEARS, BUT WITH INCONSISTENT RESULTS AND FEELING WORSE. OTHER CHANGES BESIDES THE ADDITION OF COCONUT OIL WERE THE COMPLETE REMOVAL OF SOY (AND THAT IS A MAJOR CHALLENGE IN ITSELF!), ALL TRANS FATTY ACIDS, NO REFINED SUGAR, AND ORGAN CLEANSES SEASONALLY.
MY THYROID MEDS WERE DISCONTINUED WITH MY DOCTOR’S KNOWLEDGE AS I WAS GETTING TOO ENERGETIC AND HAVING TROUBLE SLEEPING! [IMAGINE], FROM BEING A ‘SLEEPAHOLIC’COUCH POTATO THAT WAS COLD! MY WEIGHT STAYED STEADY UNTIL THE LAST THREE WEEKS AND IT HAS NOW STARTED THE DOWNWARD MOVE. MY GOAL WAS HEALTH AND JUST BELIEVED THE WEIGHT WOULD COME OFF WHEN I FOUND THE RIGHT DIET AND EXERCISE ROUTINE THAT MY LIFE WAS COMFORTABLE WITH. I’VE TRIED REMOVING THE COCONUT OIL BUT MY ENERGY DROPS AND I DON’T FEEL AS GOOD. DONNA”

This Is What Your Acne Reveals About Your Health

YOUR HEALTH

this-is-what-acne-tells-about-your-health
In Chinese Medicine, it’s believed that acne that flares up on different parts of your face represents health problems on different parts of your body. For example acne on your upper cheeks is a response to stress in your lungs or respiratory system. Smoking is but one of these causes (read on for more). Therefore a good indication of which organs need attention and care is to simply look where your acne is

UPPER FOREHEAD

Digestive System and Bladder
Drink plenty of water to flush, keep an eye on your diet, eliminate greasy foods and refined sugars. If you’re craving deep fried fatty foods, eat avocado or add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your dish. Make sure you consume plenty of fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Some of the best antioxidant rich foods or drinks include green tea, warm lemon water, and fresh berries. If your diet is not rich in naturally fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, or kefir, consider supplementing with a probiotic capsule daily. Most health food stores carry probiotic capsules.

LOWER FOREHEAD

Heart
Your heart is a massive organ that pumps blood through your entire body. It has a tough job and can become easily stressed due to poor diet, inactivity, and various mental and physical stresses. If you have pimples on your lower forehead make it a point to do regular cardiovascular exercises. Eating pomegranate andcoconut oil will also keep your heart healthy and help clear this up.
acne face

EARS

Kidneys
When kidneys are not taken care of, you may find large, painful pimples on your ears that just won’t go away. Kidney troubles are often caused by not drinking enough water and eating too much sodium.

Some other kidney destroying habits include:
-frequently delaying the call of nature
-drinking too much coffee or alcohol
-mineral deficiencies such as magnesium
-eating too much animal protein
-sleep deprivation
-excessive refined sugar

This is as good of a time as any to point out that vendors such as Subway, who tout their products as being “healthy” have an excessive amount of sodium added to almost everything on the menu. The next time that you take a look at their nutrition claims with highlighted low-fat content, take a minute to focus on the sodium column. In addition Subway adds genetically modified soy to nearly all of their foods. If you want healthy kidneys it’s best to avoid fast food in general, even the “healthy” restaurants, drink more water, and eat more parsley which is an excellent detoxifier.

EYES, ORBITAL AREA AND BETWEEN THE EYEBROWS

Liver

Oiliness, redness, flakiness and pimples between the eyebrows can indicate that your liver may have been overworked and in dire need of a cleansing. Cut back on greasy foods loaded with vegetable, soy, and canola oil, alcohol and pasteurized dairy (or dairy altogether). Avoid eating late at night as well. If you’re craving a late snack take a spoonful of raw honey. This will let your liver rest while you’re sleeping. Eat more of these during the daytime to cleanse the liver (always choose organic root vegetables):
-garlic
-grapefruit
-green tea
-carrots
-beets
-leafy green vegetables
-lemons and limes.

UPPER CHEEKS

Lungs and Respiratory System

Stresses to the lungs are likely to cause flare ups in the upper cheeks and even break your capillaries. Even if you’re not a smoker you may have noticed an upper cheek breakout due to:
-asthma
-allergies
-lung infections
-living in a polluted area.

The best thing to do is to avoid smoking and second hand smoke. Follow this link for 15 plants that can cleanse the lungs and boost respiratory health.

LOWER CHEEKS

Gum or Teeth Problems

Gum or teeth problems may contribute to acne in the lower cheek area. Be sure to avoid eating refined sugar and soft drinks. Oil pulling is a great habit to take up if you’re experiencing any type of gum or teeth problems. It’s also a good idea to eat plenty of fresh fiber rich fruits and vegetables to strengthen your teeth and gums from chewing honest natural foods.

SIDES OF THE CHIN

Hormones and Genitals

This especially affects women. Flare ups on the sides of the chin are a good indication of hormonal imbalance. This can be due to menstruation, birth control, or a diet high in soy. Sometimes, even emotional or physical stress can cause hormonal imbalances. Get plenty of sleep and make a habit of meditating or doing yoga to keep the mind focused and stress-free. Be sure to take lots of essential fatty acids such as Omega 3s. Follow this link for a list of foods rich in Omega-3s.

Some herbs that can help balance hormones include:
-licorice
-schisandra
-holy basil
-maca
-burdock
-red raspberry leaves
-rhodiola
-milk thisle.
-Green tea is also a brilliant anti-androgen.

CENTER OF THE CHIN

Small intestine and stomach

This is typically caused by a poor diet and food allergies. If your diet is adequate you simply may not be digesting the nutrients you put into it. We were always told that we are what we eat, which is true to an extent. More accurately however, we are what we can digest. If your gut is lacking probiotics and completely out of balance from not eating naturally fermented foods or taking probiotic capsules, it won’t matter how much good wholesome food you’re eating. The nutrients will simply pass right through you. Refer to the upper forehead section to learn more about what to eat to get your gut working properly.
Additionally stress, lack of sleep, and dehydration can wreak havoc on your stomach and small intestine. Getting a good nights sleep, drinking plenty of water, and addressing your stress by making lifestyle changes and practicing yoga/meditation are great non-dietary ways to address your chin acne.
